"It Spins Slowly" Is a Difficult Feature to Explain
I'm getting feedback. The questions are piling up. Not a great combo.

I'm getting feedback now. Real feedback, from real people, who used a real Plant Spinner and then had real questions. Humbling! Extremely useful! Also humbling! The questions are piling up, and they're all circling the same core problem: "How do I know it's on?" "How do I turn it off?" "How do I know if it's actually working?" "What do the modes even do?" "What is ASA mode?" Reading through these back to back, I had a small, deflating realization: I built a product whose entire function is being almost imperceptible, and then I apparently explained it in a manual that's about the size of a fortune cookie slip. Not a great combo.
The instruction manual problem
First, the easy admission: the manual is too small. The print, the format, just not enough in it. I wrote it thinking "this is a simple product, it doesn't need much explanation." Which, in hindsight, was backwards. Simple products that do something invisible need more explanation, not less, because there's no obvious visual feedback to fall back on. A blender is self-explanatory because you can see the blades spin the second you turn it on. Plant Spinner is self-explanatory in exactly zero seconds, because the whole point is that it moves so little you can't tell. That's going to get fixed, a bigger manual, clearer language, actual explanations of what each mode does instead of assuming people will intuit it from a name. What is ASA mode, actually
I still haven't nailed down the exact rotation numbers on Automatic Spin Assist mode, which, fair, is a problem I created for myself. But even setting the precise degrees aside, customers don't currently know what ASA mode is for, what it does differently from other modes, or how to tell it's the one that's active. That's a documentation gap I can close way faster than the engineering-numbers gap, and it should've been closed already. Adding it to the top of the list.
"How do I know it's on?" is a genuinely fair question
This one stopped me for a second, because my instinct was "well, it's obviously on, look at it." And then I remembered that I, the person who built this thing and lives with it, have personally struggled to catch it mid-spin. I wrote a whole blog post about how hard it is to even photograph the movement because it happens once a day and somehow still surprises me. If I can't reliably tell it's working, a brand-new customer definitely can't. So this isn't really an instructions problem. It's a feedback problem. The product needs to tell you it's alive, without me writing a paragraph explaining how to check.
Brainstorming: how do you show something that barely moves?
I don't have this solved yet, but here's where my brain's at: A sticker or marking on the base. Something static, positioned so that as the plate rotates, you can visually clock "oh, that used to be lined up here, now it's over there." Cheap, easy to add, doesn't need power or electronics. A drawn line on the plate itself. Similar idea, a simple line or arrow on the spinning surface against a fixed reference point on the base. Low-tech, but low-tech might be exactly right here. This isn't a problem that needs a light-up screen. It needs a clock hand. Some kind of light indicator. More complex, more cost, more battery draw, which matters given I still don't have a solid handle on battery life with the new solar panels. Possibly overkill for a problem a sticker could solve. Right now I'm leaning toward the sticker/line idea, mostly because it's the cheapest, fastest thing to test, and it doesn't add any new failure points to a product I'm still learning the failure points of. Sometimes the fix for "customers can't tell it's working" isn't more technology, it's a piece of tape and a Sharpie.
The bigger lesson here
All of this feedback is basically pointing at the same thing from different angles: I understand this product intimately, because I built it and lived with its quirks for a year. My customers do not have that year. They have a box, a tiny manual, and a plant that's supposedly rotating, and no easy way to confirm any of it. That gap between what I know and what a first-time customer knows is apparently the whole job right now. Not a new feature. Not a new product. Just closing the distance between "I know this works" and "you can tell it's working too." Manual's getting rewritten. Sticker's getting tested.
