It's Happening: A bunch of Firsts

My shipment came in and I got my first customer!

It's Happening: A bunch of Firsts cover

A lot happened today and I need to write it down before my brain fully short-circuits. I got my first customer! No ads. Just a person, buying a Plant Spinner, of their own free will. I have been so deep in logistics and spreadsheets that I genuinely forgot, for a second, that the whole point is for a real human to want this thing. And then one did. Before I'd even turned on a single ad. Take that, marketing plan I haven't finished yet :)

On the SAME DAY, the shipment arrived

18 Boxes arrived
18 Boxes arrived

You may remember a few posts back I googled "how long does a ship take to cross an ocean.” Well, the waiting is over. Eighteen boxes showed up, and I have officially graduated from "person anxiously tracking a container" to "person surrounded by boxes in his own garage," which, weirdly, might be a worse feeling. A more physical one, at least. The damage report: one box was slightly dinged. It was the one box that wasn't completely full. Out of that one box, about 20 units got compromised enough that I can't sell them. Not the news I wanted, but also: 20 out of 500 is a number I can live with, and those units aren't going to waste, they're becoming giveaways. Free Plant Spinners for good causes, marketing, whatever comes up. A dinged box just turned into a marketing line item. Not the worst thing ever.

The good stuff: logo's on there!

Remember when I casually admitted I never actually confirmed my logo would be on the units? Extremely mature of past-me to just leave that as a surprise for future-me. Well, now I can confirm: it's there. Right where it should be. Huge relief, genuinely, because that was the one thing on my worry list I had zero control over once the order was placed. The box looks great. The manual looks great, aside from that one small typo I mentioned a while back, which, small update, I actually caught and fixed for the next print run before it went out again. So the current batch has it, the next batch won't, and I've decided that's a completely normal and dignified way to run a company.

The best kind of chaos: preparing shipment #1

So here's where today gets genuinely fun. My first customer wants the black version, which I did not have until yesterday. The timing worked out so perfectly that it seems too convenient. Lucky doesn't begin to cover it. I'm putting together the package now, and I added something extra: a second quick-start guide, with a handwritten thank-you note, because this is my actual first customer and that deserves more than just a box showing up. So, if you're reading this, thank you, Brian! You have no idea how much this means, or maybe you do now, because I just blogged about it. I also did the very normal, very not-suspicious thing of looking Brian up on LinkedIn before shipping, just to confirm this was a real person and not some elaborate test order. He is, in fact, a real person. Verification complete. Ten out of ten trust score. Shipping proceeding. I did the fix on the quick-start guide too, rearranged it a bit while I was already in there, trying to make it easier to actually follow instead of just easier to print. Small thing, but it's the kind of small thing that apparently matters a lot once real people start opening real boxes.

The one thing I need to fix immediately

In the excitement of "wait, someone's actually buying this," I completely forgot to charge shipping. As in, it's currently just... not a line item. Free shipping, unintentionally, on unit number one. Which is a lovely gift for Brian and a genuinely bad long-term plan for me, so that's getting fixed in the store today, before literally anyone else has the chance to order.

Where I'm at right now

Eighteen boxes in the garage. Twenty units set aside as giveaways. One typo, fixed. One logo, confirmed. One real, LinkedIn-verified human named Brian about to receive Plant Spinner unit #1 with a handwritten thank-you note inside. It's happening. It's actually happening. I need to go fix my shipping settings before I think about this too much longer. AHH!
